The Alta Heiser Collection Index Vol. 3, January 1, 1944 & December 18, 1947. Early Mills in Butler County, Ohio. Every indication is that this is one of the six mills erected in Butler County, Ohio by Joel Williams and that he built it for Solomon Line. Together they planned it as a good investment, and Solomon Line’s deed to Thomas McCullough proves that the mill was built as early as 1802. Joel Williams found a good turnover for his land in 1797 when he sold to William Bigham and Robert Irwin. The present Dayton Street marks the south boundary of the tract. In 1803, William Bigham and Robert Irwin partitioned the jointly owned land, setting off the 750 acre Bigham farm, on which the stone house was built in 1810. In 1813, Thomas McCullough sold his mill to William Bigham.

In 1796, Solomon Line decided to have a mill and bought four acres at the junction of a small run in the river in Butler County, Ohio. The following year, Joel Williams sold his land to William Bigham and Robert Irwin. In 1802, Solomon Line sold the four acres, “all that Mill Seat and grist and saw mills erected thereon” to Thomas McCullough for $2,000. Thomas’s father, Samuel McCullough, was a millwright, and some have guessed he built the mills. One guess is as fair as another, and ours would be that Joel Williams built them for Solomon Line several years before the McCullough came into the picture. Also Joel Williams sold land to William Bigham and Robert Irwin in 1797. In 1803, William Bigham and Robert Irwin made a division so each would have his own part. In 1813, Thomas McCullough sold his mill to William Bigham. Mr. Bigham died in 1815, but they were long operated as the Bigham Mills.

The land extended from above the eastward loop then in the river to present Dayton St. The mill was built at the far eastern end of the loop. The sight was later known to be on the Canal Rd. near the Big Reservoir. In a suit which two of the Bighams brought against John Caldwell, an interesting description is given of the river, a stream which “so winds and descends and naturally fall as to form and make, and has ever formed and made, a good seat for mills and waterworks”. At an early date, the Bighams built a sawmill “for sawing boards, plank, scantling and other stuff”. They claimed that Mr. Caldwell, evidently resenting a rival mill, built a dam which obstructed their mill wheels and overflowed the land, causing an unhealthy condition. This was a case that caused much excitement for several years. It finally was allowed to “liabate” after John Caldwell died.
