1777 under Captain William Graham and General Potters Brigade of the 4th Battalion, 2nd Company of Milford Township, Cumberland County, PA militia on the frontier against the British.
1778 under Captain David Boal or Boles of the 7th Battalion, 2nd Company of Milford Township, Cumberland County, PA militia against the Indians at “Standing Stone Valley“. 
1780 under Captain David Boal of the 7th Battalion, 2nd Company of Milford Township, Cumberland County, PA militia against the Indians at Kishacoquillas Valley. 

James Irwin marries Nancy (Agnes)  on February 2, 1786 in Cumberland County, PA.

In looking at Robert Irwin son of John and Mary Irwin, we notice that he has a son, William Irwin born in 1781.  This could be Robert Irwin who served with James Irwin during the Revolutionary War, under Captain David Boals in 1780 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

Major Robert Irwin is son of Robert Irwin, who served with James Irwin in the Pennsylvania Militia during the Revolutionary War under the command of Captain William Graham and General Potters Brigade in 1778.  Also under the command of Captain David Boals in 1779-80.
