Note: Wondering if James Baxter is Eliza Jane Baxter’s father, since she named her first son, Robert J. Irwin. I wonder if the J stands for James. It could be first name of her father or William’s grandfather, James Irwin.
In the 1850 U.S. Federal Census for Deerfield Township, James Baxter is living with his son, William Baxter, who is lives within one household from William Cox Irwin and his two orphan children, Robert J. and Martha A.. James Baxter’s household was the 813th visited during the 1850 Census and William Cox Irwin was the 815th household visited. Eliza Jane had died the previous year in 1849 with their infant son, William M. Irwin.
It is my guess that William M. was named after his father, William Cox Irwin but do not know where M came from or what it stands for – could also be the first name of Eliza Jane’s father – but I do not think so.
I do believe that Eliza Jane Baxter’s mother’s name was Martha A. Baxter since their first daughter was named Martha A. Irwin. Later, when William Cox Irwin marries Sarah Harper he named his first daughter, Lydia Cox Irwin after his mother, Lydia Cox.
