Note: I am posting this section of Dean McMakin’s book “McMahan/McMechen, McMahan in Perry Co., AL,; DE, NC, SC, KY, TN, etc. 1678–1900” because he links Joseph and John McMaken living in Lack Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania and their move to Butler County, Ohio. A History and Biographical Cyclopedia of Butler County, Ohio stated that IRWIN settled in the south part of Union township, and was an old acquaintance of Joseph McMAKEN's, coming from the same neighborhood in PA.

1. William McMechen, b. ca 1678; m. 1stly to Janett___, b. ca 1676. They resided White Clay Creek ca 1720/1. Janett d. 21 Aug 1734, William m. 2ndly to Rebecca____ who was living 15 May 1764. Wm. d. 8 Oct 1738. He and his 1st wife buried White Clay Creek Presby. Church. Children:

William is the GF of two persons whose parents have not been identified:
a. Rebecca McMechen, a single woman of New Castle m. 15 Jan 1763 to James Ross
b. Benjamin McMechen, a Private, Capt. Henry Darby's Co., Continental Troops, enlisted 15 Jan 1776; reported dec'd 25 March 1776.

John McMackin, probably son, resided most of his life on Toms Creek in what is now Adams Co., PA and Frederick Co., MD when in 1771 he removed to Rowan Co., NC where his will is dated 31 July 1776, probated 1777, the executors having resided in PA. There is a Philadelphia marriage dated 9,27,1738 between John McMicken and Margaret Carey which is probably him.

Could this be John Blair McMahan b. ca 1754 and Margaret Curley? later in TN--guess not as he m. 1790 and his father is John McMachon/McMahan son of William wife Elizabeth ?possibly Blair; b. Ireland ca 1723, to Rowan Co., NC 1776, to Jonesboro, Washington Co., TN 1776 (Jefferson Co., TN today, where Strawberry Plains is), d. there 1789, m. 1747 Isabella Barnes/Blair or Gaines)
There is a question whether she is the mother of all his children. There is a Philadelphia marriage dated 27 Oct 1793 between James Burkhard, widower, and Margaret McMicken, widow, which is probably her. If she was the mother of John and Joseph McMaken, she d. in Butler Co., OH age 102 years. Children:

13e John McMaken, possible son of John. His life and that of his bro. Joseph are closely aligned. They are seen 1779/80 in Lack Twp., Cumberland Co., PA where they served in the Rev. War. By 1789 they were in Mommouth Boone Co., KY. After the Treaty of Greenville in 1794 they crossed the river into Ohio and settled in Butler Co., OH. A co. history sketch of his grandson says that John was b. in MD which may be so. Children:

23. James McMakin, b. New Castle Co., DE shortly bef 1755; he accompanied his father to Spartanburg Co., SC where he m. Nancy Ann___. b. aft 1755, quite possibly the sis. of the Hon. James Jordan (ca1752-19 May 1804), commissioner of Ft. Prince during the Rev. War, represented SC in the First Constitutional Convention, a repres. in the SC legislature 1788-90 and a state senator from 1800/02. The adm. of James McMakin is dated 15 Sept 1808. His widow was apparently alive in 1830. Children:

Jane McMakin, b. Spartanburg Co., SC ca 1784; was an unmarried mother. By 1830 she was residing in Greenville Co., SC where her will is dated 17 Aug 1870, probated 4 May 1878. Her Will mentions only 2 chldren, but census records and other docs. show that she had many more. The children of her bro., James Jordan McMakin, are by no means proven, and it may be that some of the children attributed to her listed below are of her brother and vice versa. Children: (abbreviated--John Hiram b. ca 1805; Sanford; Willis; Cassandra b. ca 1812 m. Benjamin Ravan and resided Greenville Co., SC, issue; Rebecca d. Barbara McMahen Rushing, descendant of David McMahen wife Sarah, he lived SC, Rutherford Co, TN, served War of 1812 in 1814 & 15, d. ca 1826 Lauderdale Co., AL, need parents? My line is his son, Hugh Blair McMahan b. 1804 Abbeville Distr., SC. thru George Blair Scott McMahen.
John McMackin on page 2 can't be a son of William! He himself had a son who was born in about 1714, if that son's tombstone is accurate. John McMackin is likely a younger contemporary of William of White Clay Creek.
