Description:
This data collection contains an estimated 80,000 application files from officers and enlisted men who served in the Revolutionary War in all branches of the American military: army, navy, and marines. The files that make up these records consist of 10" x 14" cards or 10" x 14" envelopes that can contain documents relating to an application for a pension or bounty-land warrant by a Revolutionary War veteran, his widow, or his heirs. The files can contain a wide variety of records submitted to support an application. Information of genealogical interest includes the application itself, which can provide the soldier’s name, rank, unit, time of service, age, date of birth, residence, and sometimes birthplace.

  1. What I learned James Irwin Revolutionary War Pension Application is that James Small served with him in Cumberland County, PA along with Robert Irwin, his brother. James Small settled in Green County, Ohio from Pennsylvania.

  2. Also that Robert Irwin lived in Butler County, Ohio in 1832 and died before November 1833.

    James was placed on Revolutionary War Pension Roll on December 23, 1833 and his pension commenced from March 4, 1831. So he received back pension payments from March 4, 1831 to when he started receiving regular pension payments (which I guess would have been December 23, 1833).

  3. In looking at the RW pension papers, it states that James was granted $20 annually and that he was paid $60 in 1834; which included the back pension payments from March 4, 1831.
