Cemeteries: Extracts FROM Vol. 17, JOURNALS OF JOSIAH V. THOMPSON, 1926, Cumberland Co, PA
Contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Carolyn Shearer and others as shown.
originally posted by Charlee Wilson and used with permission.

Extracts of Cumberland county cemeteries from the 27 Vol work of Josiah V. Thompson.
The Cumberland County cemeteries are in Vol 17. Thanks to Carolyn Shearer for
extracting this information. Special thanks to Charlee Wilson for painstakingly
editing the work from scanned images of volumes on microfilm.
The journals are now in the possession of the Western PA Historical Society in
Pittsburgh and are extremely fragile.
Cemetery readings are partials of most cemeteries; they include additional data than
other readings posted in these archives.
Readings are as shown in the journal, and several of the larger cemeteries have
several sections, which are not consecutive. You need to look through the file
to get them all.

Cemeteries: Longsdorf Cem, Silver Spring Twp, Cumberland Co, PA
In the early 1950Õs, John Henry Cocklin began searching the cemeteries of Cumberland County
for the tombstones of his deceased family members. The Cocklin family has been in Cumberland
County since the 1700Õs, and John found that his family members were buried in many of the
county cemeteries. In an effort to manage the amount of information contained in each cemetery,
John transcribed the data from the tombstones. His interest in his own family grew into an
interest in local history and the history of all the families in the Eastern half of Cumberland County.
He not only transcribed the information from the tombstones, but also added genealogical
information and additional dates from newspaper articles and other sources. Therefore, the
information contained herein is more than what could be derived from the tombstones themselves.
The members of the West Shore Y Genealogy Club (WSYGC) have compiled the information
that John Henry Cocklin transcribed, and re-walked Longsdorf, Mt. Zion, and Youngs to add any new information.
LONGSDORF CEMETERY
Longsdorf Cemetery is located on Locust Point Road approximately 2 miles South of New Kingston.
The earliest graves belong to members of the Longsdorf family, so this may have been the Longsdorf Family Farm graveyard.
For our convenience, we numbered the sections as follows: When you enter the main gate, Section 1 is on your left,
Section 2 on the right. Sections 3, 4, and 5, are along the back, left to right.

Section map of this cemetery may be found at
http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/cumberland/??
This cemetery is in Upper Allen Township, Cumberland County, PA.
It is on the southwest corner of York Street and Winding Hill Road,
south of Mechanicsburg. The cemetery is not visible from either
road, the entrance is on Winding Hill Road.
This is a listing of gravestones in the cemetery, done in the fall
of 1999. Some of these stones are hard to read, the info here is
my best effort and in a few cases may be wrong. You should always
try to field check your ancestors stones.
As some of the rows are not straight, and people are buried between
rows, I have chosen to do this alphabetical as far as surnames,
given names arranged in family groups if that way on the stones.
I have sectioned the cemetery using paved and grass roads as
boundaries. The letters after the name, such as Sect A, gives the
section where the grave is located.
When the wife's maiden name is on the stone, I have put it in
CAPITAL letters and a cross-reference is given in the appropriate
place in the surname listing.
[Comments by me are in brackets like this, some is genealogical
data, see references at end.]
Living people have been removed.
If a date or name has a ? in it, I can't read it or am not sure.
Age, when given, is years-months-day format
Abbreviations such as w/o for "wife of" are used.
Jere Zeamer transcribed the stones in 1894. I have used his dates
when I could no longer read much of the stone. Some stones are no
longer there and I have added that data as [from Zeamer]
Thanks to Leon Hertzler for some of the genealogical data.

Jere Zeamer copied the transcriptions in 1905. Elizabeth Landis Carson copied
the stones in 2001. In some cases when a joint stone has replaced individual
stones, the full dates from Zeamer are included.
If I have not found the stone, I have used Zeamers data & noted [Zeamer]
In 1999-2000, Boy Scout Billy George copied the stones and drew the locations
of the stones in the oldest section, directly behind the church. I have called
that Section A. His work is on file at the gift shop at Peace Church and the

Names of the living have been removed, except husband's names.

This cemetery is located behind a building on State Road, north of Trindle
Road, Route 641.
Jere Zeamer transcribed these stones around 1895, his account is undated. His
material was transcribed by Helen Harmon in 1955. These stones were read by
Elizabeth Landis Carson in the fall of 2001. Some were very difficult to read
and may be wrong. If your spelling or dates differ, please go and check them
yourself. There were several stones that I could not read. ? indicates letter
or number I could not read. There is a pile of about 20 tombstones beneath a
tree in the back left section, I did not attempt to move any. I have gone over
Zeamers records, and for the stones that I did not find, I used Zeamers data.
[I have added some other material & genealogy and that is all in brackets, like
this.] There are some references to the "Kober book" which is "A Limited
Genealogy of the Kober-Cover-Coover Family and Cognate Families", by Melanchthan
Coover, published in Gettysburg PA in 1942.
I have sectioned the cemetery and added section letters to help locate stones
for anyone who wishes to find a particular stone. Section A is behind the
former church and extends back to an imaginary line going from the large obelisk
beside the road across left to near the tree. Section B is the back part of that
area. The separation between A & B is not straight. Section C is to the right
of A & B, Section D to the right of that and the newest section, E, is on the
far right.
Abbreviations used: d. means died, w/o means wife of, s/o means son of, etc.
There is an index at the back for maiden names and other names not alphabetized.

THE CAMP HILL BOROUGH CEMETERY
The Camp Hill Cemetery originated in the early 1800's as the private burial plots for
the John Bowmen family.
The cemetery is situated between N. 21st Street to the east and N. 23rd Street to the
west with Walnut Street to the South and Logan Street on the north. What started out as a
one-half acre burial plot along N. 23rd Street, was running out of space by 1870's, so an
additional "176 perches neat" were purchased. This was located between Cemetery Lane,
north of N. 22nd St [runs along the west side of the current Camp Hill Fire Company
Building] and N. 21st Street. After 1879 the private Bowman burying grounds became a
non-profit Cemetery Association.
By 1960, the Camp Hill Cemetery Association was no longer able to maintain the cemetery,
so the Cumberland County Courts deeded the property to the Borough of Camp Hill to
operate and maintain.
The Camp Hill Cemetery Project was completed by members of the West Shore YMCA Genealogy
Club, http://www.rootsweb.com/~pawsygc/ The transcription is actually much more than was
found by walking the cemetery. An original transcription from ca. 1950 by John Cocklin
was used to complete information where tombstones have disappeared. In addition, the
Borough of Camp Hill opened their records dating as far back as 1897 to enable us to
reconstruct the cemetery as accurately as possible.
There is much more information in the Borough records than is indicated here.
Additional information may be available on military records, in correspondence, in
Burial Permits, and Receipt Stubs. It is suggested that you contact the Borough for
additional information at 717-737-3456.
